Training and Qualifications: How We Prepare Carers for Complex Needs

At Direct Homecare, we understand that delivering high-quality complex care at home requires more than compassion—it requires competence, confidence, and continuous professional development. When families trust us with the care of their loved ones, especially those with complex medical needs, they deserve to know that our carers are exceptionally well-trained and fully qualified.

What Is Complex Care?

Complex care involves supporting individuals who have substantial and ongoing health needs due to chronic illness, disability, or following hospital discharge. This can include care for people who:

  • Have tracheostomies or ventilators
  • Require PEG or NG feeding
  • Live with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury
  • Have severe epilepsy or frequent seizures
  • Need 24/7 care or monitoring

Our Core Training:

  • Manual Handling & Mobility Support
  • Infection Prevention & Control
  • Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults
  • First Aid and Basic Life Support
  • Medication Management
  • The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism

Our Specialist Clinical Training:

  • Tracheostomy care
  • Ventilator support and emergency protocols
  • Enteral feeding (PEG, NG)
  • Seizure management and rescue medication
  • Catheter and stoma care

Our In-House Training Programme

One of the things that sets us apart is that we deliver all of our training in-house, led by our own experienced clinical educators and registered nurses.

This means we can ensure:

  • Consistency and high standards across all our care teams
  • Training is tailored to the specific needs of our clients
  • Carers can ask questions, practice hands-on skills, and receive feedback in a supportive environment

Supervised Practice & Ongoing Support

After completing training, carers do not work alone immediately. Instead, we provide shadowing opportunities with experienced carers and supervised shifts overseen by our nursing team. We offer 24/7 clinical support, regular supervision and refresher training as part of our commitment to continuous professional development.

We believe that exceptional care starts with exceptional training. By investing in our own in-house training programme, delivered by clinicians who understand complex care inside and out, we make sure every carer is prepared—both professionally and personally.
